Art

Course Description

This full year course surveys the beginning basics of visual art, introducing or reviewing the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design, including color theory, spatial illusion, and perspective drawing. Students explore the materials, tools, and techniques of various 2-D media for both drawing and painting (graphite, charcoal, ink, pastel, watercolor, acrylic and tempera), developing original style and personal expression while applying skills to solve challenges creatively. 3-D design is also similarly explored. The science of visual perception and brain processes used to see as an “artist sees” are explored and practiced in depth. Students will be exposed to various contemporary and historical movements and artists, learning historical and cultural context while developing both visual literacy and a working vocabulary of aesthetics. They will discuss the purpose, value, and meaning of art, and practice their ability to describe, analyze, interpret, and critically judge their own artwork and the work of others through discussion, critiques and writing. Students will be exposed to 21st century art careers and corresponding educational pathways. This one-year course meets the UC and CSU Visual and Performing Arts Requirement.
