English 10 (Period 7th)

Course Description

Students in grades 10 read three to four class novels/plays from the district-approved list and some independent novels of their choice. Students also read and study a wide variety of non-fiction text. Students learn proper mechanics, usage, and grammar on a daily basis and apply these language rules to their own writing. The basic five-paragraph essay is taught/reviewed and then applied, using concepts in the class novels as springboards for the writing assignments. Students learn argumentation writing in preparation for the District-wide Writing Assessment given in the spring. Students also study and learn over 300 new vocabulary words each year from the district-approved Vocabulary Workshop program.
